Princess Diana Faints During Expo Tour

May 6, 1986

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) _ Princess Diana fainted while touring Expo 86 on Tuesday, but after a brief rest left for her hotel, smiling and waving to the crowd.

The 24-year-old Diana was ″very warm and quite fatigued″ when she fainted while she and Prince Charles were visiting the California pavilion, said Vic Chapman, a spokesman for the couple.

As soon as Diana slumped she was helped to a private area in the pavilion, and photographers, reporters and pavilion staff were ordered out of the building.

Chapman discounted speculation that Diana might be pregnant.

″It was simply a matter of feeling warm in some of the pavilions that she was in - different temperature changes and as I say it’s been quite dramatic today.

″But she’s not pregnant. She was feeling much better when she left,″ he said.

An ambulance was called, but Chapman said Diana was attended to by Canadian and British doctors ″and of course helped by the Prince of Wales.″

The California pavilion was the last of five to be visited by the couple Tuesday. They are to return again Wednesday to tour more pavilions before leaving British Columbia after their seven-day visit.

The fainting spell was not expected to disrupt the remainder of the royal couple’s schedule, said Chapman.
