Sacred Heart basketball falls to Rye Country Day
Junior center Sarah Eckerson scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Sacred Heart Greenwich basketball team in its 44-38 loss to Rye Country Day School in an FAA game held on Monday.
The Tigers (8-9), who celebrated their Senior Day, entered halftime tied with the Wildcats at 20-20.
“We came out with the same fire and intensity in the second half and enjoyed a marginal, three-point lead,” Sacred Heart coach Ayo Hart said. “The game was very physical and I thought our girls responded well. Both teams made numerous trips to the line, but RCDS won the battle of the free throws.”
Senior forward Ciara Henry scored 12 points for Sacred Heart, which travels to FAA foe Masters School on Wednesday. Sophomore forward Morgan Smith added eight points and nine rebounds off the bench for Sacred Heart.
Alana Jones led all scorers with 19 points for Rye Country Day. Kat Brydson chipped in 11 points for the victors. After playing Masters on Wednesday, the Tigers will compete in the FAA Tournament next week.
“Although it was a tough loss, it’s the kind of game that we needed as we get ready for the postseason,” Hart said. “In the absence of starters Leah Atkins and Laura Holland, we have been able to get key minutes from Julia Spiegel and Morgan Smith. If we can keep getting this kind of impact from our bench when Leah and hopefully, Laura return next week, I think we’ll be positioned well for the playoffs.”
