MONTAGUE, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say one person is dead after a pickup truck struck a tree in Montague and burst into flames.

Police say 70-year-old Warren Whitney of Montague was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle struck the tree just off Route 47 at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Sgt. Richard Suchanek says Montague Center firefighters were first to the scene, and had nearly put out the flames when the gas tank caught fire, engulfing the truck.

Whitney was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Police say a witness reported having to swerve out of the way of Whitney's weaving and speeding truck.

The crash remains under investigation.
