School Spirit Hits the Local Gridiron for Homecoming Games
Homecoming is, without a doubt, one of the best times of the year, and if you can get a win that weekend, it just makes the dance afterward the highlight of the fall season.
Several local high schools will hold Homecoming celebrations during their football games this weekend.
Fitchburg will host Groton-Dunstable Regional at historic Crocker Field Friday at 7 p.m., while Lunenburg and Leominster have a Saturday Homecoming doubleheader: The Blue Knights will host the Blue Devils of Murdock at the Veterans Memorial at 2 p.m. Saturday, while the Blue Devils of Leominster host Shepherd Hill Regional at historic Doyle Field Saturday at 7 p.m.
Fitchburg’s Homecoming king and queen, and the court, will arrive at the corner of Circle and Broad with the cheerleaders and the band at about 6:45 p.m., the traditional arrival time.
Lunenburg will hold its annual parade of floats through the town center in the hours before the game with Murdock. The floats will be judged at halftime, and the winner of the competition will be announced after the game. You should also stick around, as the Lunenburg band traditionally performs post-game on Homecoming.
Leominster has a full day of high school athletic activities scheduled for the Doyle carpet, starting with freshman football at 10 a.m., field hockey at noon, and the varsity boys’ and girls’ soccer games with archrival Fitchburg in the afternoon.
LHS will crown its Homecoming king and queen, and court, at halftime.
In Ashburnham, Oakmont Regional is set to play host to Tyngsboro as part of its Homecoming weekend activties.
* In other action this weekend (all games 7 p.m. unless noted):
Monty Tech will look to make it three in a row on Friday night, but the Bulldogs have a tough task as they host Blackstone Valley Tech.
In addition, St. Bernard’s hosts Blackstone-Millville Regional over at the Bernardian Bowl, Nashoba Regional is at Wachusett, and North Middlesex is at Marlboro.
On Saturday, Ayer Shirley will travel to face Gardner at 1 p.m.
