Ferris St. 3, Michigan St. 2
DETROIT (AP) _ Kevin Moore and Gary Kitching scored second-period power-play goals Friday as Ferris State held off a late Michigan State rally to for a 3-2 CCHA quarterfinal victory over the Spartans.
The win sends the Bulldogs into the tournament semifinals for only the second time. Ferris State will play top-seeded Miami, Ohio at 5 p.m. Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.
In Friday’s other quarterfinal, Lake Superior State got three goals from Rob Valicevic and rolled past Bowling Green 7-1. The two-time defending CCHA champion Lakers will play Michigan in an 8 p.m. semifinal.
Ferris led 3-0 early in the third period, but the Spartans came back with goals by Anson Carter at 3:23 and Rem Murray at 14:32.
Michigan State, which was 0 for 7 on the power play, put heavy pressure on the Bulldogs over the last 5:30, but couldn’t score the equalizer.
Kitching gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead on the power play with a deflection of Daryl Filipek’s shot from the point at 15:11.
Ferris increased its lead to 3-0 at 2:09 of the third period when Brad Burnham took the puck off the back of the net and banked it in off the far post.
Michigan State finally beat Bulldog goalie Craig Lisko at 3:23. Carter made a move on the goalie and beat him on the short side.
Michael Burkett carried the puck to the Ferris goal and passed back to Murray, who beat Lisko from the edge of the crease to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to one with 5:28 remaining.
Moore opened the scoring at the 33-second mark of the second period, poking the puck into the net when Spartans’ goalie Mike Buzak failed to cover the rebound of Tim Christian’s shot during a power play.
Lisko finished with 28 saves.
