Townsend Town Picnic Today
By Scott Shurtleff
TOWNSEND -- The second annual town picnic will be held today. The event is part of the legacy of John Whittemore, a longtime resident who first introduced the idea before his passing last September.
The annual picnic on the town common is free, paid for by the John Whittemore Memorial Fund, which staged fundraising events throughout the year in support of the event.
Carlene Whittemore, John’s widow, wants to keep alive his desire to bring lasting harmony to a town he loved.
He personally funded the first town picnic, which Carlene says was well-received. “People left their disagreements at home and had a great time. Everyone was talking about it. They’re still talking about it.”
She expects as many as 2,000 people to attend this year’s event, twice the number from last year’s inaugural party.
The festivities will run from noon to 4 p.m.
