BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Roman Catholic Archdiocese is kicking off its annual fundraising drive.

The 289 parishes in the archdiocese are set to announce their on Saturday and Sunday with a theme "Forward in Hope."

Cardinal Sean O'Malley says the fundraising drive gives Catholics an opportunity to answer Pope Francis' call "to renew our commitment to the mission of the church."

The appeal provides the vast majority of the archdiocese's philanthropic funding for the year. The money goes toward the archdiocese's 50 central ministries.

Last year, the appeal raised $15.2 million, $1 million more than the year before. The pledged contributions include cash received by the archdiocese and uncollected pledges.
