Nilsson Injured for Rest of Season
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Milwaukee Brewers All-Star catcher David Nilsson will miss the rest of the season because of a broken thumb, a newspaper reported.
The catcher’s teammates learned the news shortly before taking the field against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said in Monday’s editions. The Brewers lost the game 5-4.
Nilsson was struck by a foul tip at the start of Saturday’s game against the Padres.
The 29-year-old native of Brisbane, Australia, joined the Brewers in 1987 as an undrafted free agent.
Nilsson, the first Australian player ever to make a major league All-Star team, arranged his contract to become a free agent after this season. He is considering playing for Australia in next year’s Summer Olympics in Sydney.
When he was named to the team in July, Nilsson was leading NL catchers with 19 homers to go with his .315 batting average and 51 RBIs.
