Official accused of using public funds to build private road
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — State investigators are examining whether a county commissioner misused county funds to build a road on private land leading to her family’s property.
The Billings Gazette reported on Thursday that Montana Department of Justice spokesman John Barnes says the state Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into allegations that Musselshell County Commissioner Nicole Borner misused county resources.
The investigation comes after a request from Musselshell County Attorney Kevin Peterson.
Borner and her defenders in the county have called the allegations baseless and politically motivated.
Barnes says the state investigators typically provide their findings to the county attorney who will determine whether a criminal prosecution is warranted. He says county attorneys typically make that decision in consultation with state prosecutors to avoid potential conflicts of interest.
