Gamecocks mourn death of baseball commitment
COLUMBIA — South Carolina is mourning the death of a baseball commitment from Lexington.
Brett Williams, a sophomore pitcher and infielder at White Knoll High School, died Tuesday, according to The (Columbia) State. Complications of an illness were suspected as the cause of death, the Lexington County coroner told the newspaper.
Williams had committed to South Carolina earlier this month.
“Brett Williams was a special kid,” Gamecocks head coach Chad Holbrook said in a statement. “He had all the traits coaches love to have on their teams. He had great character, a tireless work ethic, and an incredible personality that we were all drawn to. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his beautiful family and everyone in the Lexington and White Knoll community. No. 22 will be deeply missed.”
