Barnes to miss Lamar’s first four games
Junior safety Jalen Barnes is academically ineligible for Lamar’s first four games, coach Ray Woodard confirmed Tuesday.
Barnes, a transfer from Texas Tech, was listed as a first-team safety before the announcement.
“Jalen had a couple of summer classes pending and he didn’t get there,” Woodard said. “He’ll be back with us for the rest of the season (after the suspension.”
The four games Barnes will miss are against No. 16 Coastal Carolina, FBS No. 15 Houston, No. 2 Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana.
Barnes is the third Cardinal to receive an academic-related suspension this season, following sophomore quarterback Brett Cox (season) and senior wide receiver Michael Handy (two games).
Lamar opens its 2016 season next on Sept. 3 at home against the Chanticleers at 7 p.m.
