Jeffery Harness wins Tuesday runoff in House District 85
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A lawyer is the winner of a special election to the state House of Representatives in southwest Mississippi.
Jeffery Harness defeated retired educator JoAnn Collins-Smith in a runoff Tuesday in House District 85. The district covers parts of Claiborne, Franklin, Jefferson and Warren counties.
Harness will serve the final year on a House term begun by Democrat America “Chuck” Middleton. First elected in 1995, Middleton resigned in late August.
Collins and Harness were the top two vote-getters among four candidates on Nov. 6. Candidates in special elections run without party labels.
Both Harness and Collins campaigned by pledging to seek better schools, improved roads, expanded health care and more jobs.
