Piazza Leaves Game 5 With Injury
NEW YORK (AP) _ New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza was forced to leave Sunday’s Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves in the 14th inning with a strained left forearm.
Piazza apparently was injured on a play at the plate in the 13th inning, when he tagged out Keith Lockhart trying to score from first on a double by Chipper Jones.
It was the final out of the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Piazza struck out and then left the game, replaced by Todd Pratt.
Piazza missed the last two games of the division series against Arizona with a spained and swollen left thumb. Then, in Game 3 of the NLCS, he sustained a mild concussion in a collision as he tagged out Bret Boone, who trying to score.
Pratt replaced Piazza in the two games against the Diamondbacks and he won the deciding Game 4 with a 10th-inning home run.
