Free showing of Stalin’s Ukrainian famine
NEW HAVEN-It was a time of hunger, torture and death in Ukraine.
And Josef Stalin’s imposed famine that killed nearly 10 million Ukrainians called the Holodomor is the subject of a feature film entitled Bitter Harvest that will be played during two showings Sunday at St. Michael the Archangel church, 569 George Street.
The 2017 movie starring Max Irons (son of Jeremy Irons), Samantha Barks and Barry Pepper (of ’61, Private Ryan, the Green Mile and the Dale Earnhardt Story) will be shown at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the church’s community center. It is being sponsored by the church, the Ukrainian Heritage Center and the Knights of Columbus Metropolitan Audrey Sheptytsky Council 16253.
The movie tells the story of the famine, the Bolshevik revolution and the fight for a free Ukraine through the eyes of Irons and Barks, two lovers.
