Man shot by Person County sheriff’s deputy dies
A man who was shot Tuesday by a Person County sheriff’s deputy in Timberlake has died, the sheriff’s office confirmed Wednesday.
The shooting happened on Antioch Church Road and involved one other person, authorities said.
The man was rushed for medical treatment to Duke University Hospital, where he died, Sheriff Dewey Jones said. Authorities declined to release the man’s identity, pending notification of next of kin.
A Person County deputy served an eviction at this home on Antioch Church Road. Sheriff Dewey Jones said the man came out with a gun in his hand.
“We tried multiple means of trying to get the guy to surrender the weapon,” Jones said. ’We even had the preacher come by and try to talk him down.”
Jones said after talking with the man for more than hour, he made a move and officers fired their weapons.
“He ended up pointing the weapon toward the officers and the officers returned fire,” he said.
Neighbor Brandon Chambers lives next door.
“They were all set up and the shots started firing. About seven or eight fired,” he said. “It’s shocking, hard to believe. Kind of sad situation once you think about it and realize what happened there today.”
The sheriff said the shooting is hard emotionally for the officers.
“Something you never want to do as an officer,” he said. “You never want to have to use your weapon.”
The officers involved are on administrative duty, and the SBI is investigating the shooting.
