Armed man arrested after I-5 crash

COTTAGE GROVE — A man was arrested on Interstate 5 Friday morning after he allegedly pulled out a gun following a traffic crash near Cottage Grove, according to Oregon State Police.

Steven Lind Smith, 66, of Cottage Grove was booked into the Lane County Jail. He faces charges of menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, pointing a firearm at another and second-degree disorderly conduct.

The incident happened in the northbound lanes of the interstate at 9:20 a.m. A gold Mazda pickup truck was reportedly being driven recklessly by Smith before the crash with a commercial motor vehicle, police said.

Smith then allegedly got out of the pickup armed with a firearm. Traffic came to a halt and police rushed to the scene.

It was not immediately clear whether any shots were fired during the incident.
