Three former Aztecs on opening-day NFL rosters

September 8, 2016 GMT

Three former San Diego State players are on active NFL rosters to open the 2016 season.

Safety Nat Berhe is with the New York Giants while wide receiver Brice Butler and tight end Gavin Escobar both are playing for the Dallas Cowboys. All three players will be together this weekend. The Giants travel to Dallas for a Week 1 matchup that will be televised by FOX on Sunday afternoon.

Berhe was a fifth round pick on the Giants in the 2014 NFL Draft. A calf injury that required surgery sidelined him throughout the 2015 season. Berhe may start at free safety against Dallas.

Butler was a seventh round pick by Oakland in 2013 who was traded to Dallas early last season. He finished the season with 12 catches for 258 yards.

Escobar also was drafted in 2013, going to the Cowboys in the second round. He had eight catches for 64 yards and one touchdown, his role limited playing behind Dallas’ Jason Witten.

Former SDSU guard Darrell Greene is on the practice squad with the Philadelphia Eagles. Greene signed as a free agent with the team shortly after the 2016 draft. Offensive tackle Pearce Slater and long snapper Jeff Overbaugh also were a 2016 free agent signing, by the Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Rams, respectively, but both players were cut.

Running back Ronnie Hillman had been with the Denver Broncos the past four years before being released last week.

The Mountain West announced that 67 former players from the conference are on active NFL rosters this season. Boise State led the way with 14 players, followed by Utah State (11), Fresno State (9), Colorado State (8), San Jose State (7), Nevada (6), Wyoming (5), SDSU (3), New Mexico (2), Hawaii (1) and UNLV (1).
