YUBA ROUNDUP: Smrt crowned NorCal champion in heptathlon
Yuba College’s Hanah Smrt, a freshman from Reno, Nevada, won the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association Northern California Regional Championship in the heptathlon after besting the field at Diablo Valley College in Pleasanton on Wednesday.
Smrt finished with a total score of 4,377 points to beat out the second-place competitor’s total of 4,234 points. She posted either heptathlon or lifetime bests in all seven events: the 100-meter hurdles (15.65 seconds), high jump (1.64 meters), shot put (8.15m), 200 (26.25), long jump (5.33m), javelin (24.79m) and 800 (3:35).
Smrt will compete in the heptathlon in the CCCAA state championships on May 18-19 in Bakersfield, where she will be one of, if not the favorite in the event. She is currently ranked second in the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump, and is third in the high jump. Smrt also set the school record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 11 inches this year.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling when you see a student athlete that is as talented as Hanah also be your hardest worker,” said Yuba coach Howdy Atkinson. “Hanah loves competition, but she loves to put the work in even more.”
Yuba College’s women’s team currently leads the NorCal Championships, which conclude on May 11.
Napa Valley 5, Yuba 3
In Napa – Mike Shoenberger went 2 for 5 with a solo home run and scored twice, but it wasn’t enough for the 49ers in a loss in Game 2 of their Bay Valley Conference series with the Storm.
Aidan Gums and Ray More smacked a pair singles each to account for Yuba’s other four hits in the game. Along with Shoenberger’s homer in the fifth, Andrew Schnitzius drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Dareon Thompson hit an RBI groundout in the seventh to plate the Niners’ other runs.
The 49ers (14-22, 5-12 BVC) will look to win the series when the teams meet today for the rubber match at 1 p.m. at Colusa Casino Stadium in Marysville.
