Windber Relay For Life has a new setting and a one-day schedule

July 2, 2018 GMT

The Relay For Life of Windber, on July 14, has undergone a few changes this year.

Instead of taking place in Windber over the course of two days, it will be held at Faranda’s Farm, 171 Penn Ave., Hollsopple, on a single day.

Jenn Kush, community development manager for the American Cancer Society, said the site change was made because of a problem with the venue.

“Windber Recreation always donated the venue to us,” Kush said. “Typically, when we do fundraisers we do not want dollars to have to pay for the venue, and Windber Rec was not able to do that anymore.

The relay team had to find a place that could accommodate them and help with the food. Faranda’s Farm was willing to do that.”

Kush said this is the first year she has worked with the Windber group.

“They saw that the numbers were going down every year with the number of participants, especially for people who wanted to stay overnight, so it made sense to consolidate the activities into one day, get everyone out on a Saturday,” she said.

“There are still a few teams that want to stay overnight and will do so. I think without the pressure of having to stay, it will make it more fun for those that do want to stay.”

This year’s event begins at 11 a.m. and will run until 11 p.m. The event will continue to feature luminary bag sales and a related ceremony, concessions, the Torch Relay, the Fight Back Ceremony, the survivors dinner and other activities.

’We kept all of the activities, plus added a hayride for survivors and their guests at 5:30 p.m.,” she said. “Dinner for the survivors and their guests will be at 6 p.m. at the large barn and feature musician Tyler Korzi.”

Other planned activities include a cake and baked goods auction at 7 p.m., karaoke from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., a Luminaria Ceremony at 8:30 p.m., a Celestial Fire performance at 9:30 p.m., Minute to Win It at 9:30 p.m. and closing ceremonies at 10:30 p.m.

Kush said several activities have been added for children and families. The Kids Relay will be from 1 to 4 p.m. An inflatable bounce house will be open during the same time. A kid-only lip sync battle will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. The Kids & Family Minute to Win It will begin at 3 p.m. People can register for the events at www.tinyurl.com/2018KidsRelay.

All day Saturday, a large version of Kerplunk, tic-tac-toe and Twister, along with many other games, will be available.

“The Farandas will have a few of their animals at the farm, which everyone will enjoy,” she said.

Kush said individuals who are interested in attending any of the cancer survivor activities should register in advance at www.relayforlife.org/pawindber. People can also register by calling 814-695-5445.
