Sheriff accused of drunken driving faces trial in new county
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire county sheriff accused of drunken driving is scheduled to face a one-day trial.
Merrimack County Sheriff Scott Hilliard is scheduled for trial on Dec. 19. Court proceedings initially were scheduled in Franklin. A judge granted both parties’ request for a change of venue, to Nashua, in Hillsborough County.
Hilliard’s lawyers have argued that all evidence obtained after his arrest in Tilton in August should be inadmissible at trial. Hilliard’s arrest report shows his blood-alcohol content was three times the legal limit of 0.08. The 58-year-old Hilliard was off duty at the time.
Hilliard, who pleaded not guilty, is serving his seventh term as sheriff.
