Old Trieste Wins at Del Mar

September 7, 1998

DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) _ Old Trieste cruised to an easy five-length victory Sunday at the $200,000 Del Mar Breeders’ Cup Handicap.

Old Trieste, a favorite in the field of five and ridden by Chris McCarron, covered one mile in 1:35 1-5 for his fifth win in 10 starts.

Old Trieste paid $2.40 and $2.10 and earned $123,120. Grajagan, the runner-up, paid $2.80. There was no show wagering.

Old Trieste had a bit of an awkward start, but quickly went four wide to take the lead. The 3-year-old held a small lead outside eventual third-place finisher Stalwart Tsu on the first turn, then got clear off the rail under a long hold on the backstretch.

The son of 1992 Horse of the Year A.P. Indy drew away off the second turn.
