Discoverers tennis visits Millard West
Monday saw the Columbus tennis team jump on a bus a travel to Omaha for the Millard west Invitational, where they competed in a field of 16 schools.
As a team, the Discoverers finished seventh with 54 points behind winners Lincoln East, who posted a score of 95.
Columbus No. 1 Lauren Benck went 1-3 in her four matches on the day, including a victory against Millard South’s Greta Wostoupal by an 8-5 score and finished in ninth place, earning 16 team points in the process.
Aspen Luebbe played No. 2 singles for the Discoverers and finished in seventh with a 2-2 record and 10 points.
Luebbe defeated Bellevue east’s Sophie Timmins, 8-3 and Fremont’s Elise Patchen, 8-6.
Columbus’ No. 1 doubles duo of Regi Zakrzewski and Sara Kruse finished in ninth with a 3-1 record, earning 16 team points, while the No. 2 doubles pair of Monyyka Hazlett and Mia Janssen were ninth, going 2-2 and picking up eight points.
Columbus head coach Dave Licari was pleased with how his squad performed.
“It was a good day of tennis overall,” he said. “Seventh place is one of our highest team finishes ever at this tournament.”
Benck and Luebbe both acquitted themselves well in the strong field, said Licari.
“Lauren and Aspen are improving rapidly as singles players,” he said. “Neither one has a lot of experience with this being Aspen’s first year and Lauren has been playing for a year and a half.”
Things are also looking up on the doubles side of the net, said Licari.
“Regi and Sara improved their record to 11-5 at No. 1 doubles with some solid play -- they ran into a very strong tandem from LSE in their first match, but came back to play well the rest of the day,” he said. “Monykka and Mia improved to 13-6 at No. 2 doubles – they’re working better together each time out.”
However, there is still plenty more tennis to be played just this week alone, said Licari.
“The girls are looking forward to two home contests this week,” he said. “First, a tough dual with Lincoln North Star on Thursday and the Columbus Invitational on Saturday.”
