Commission affirms firing of officer for drunken driving
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — The civil service commission in Cedar Rapids has upheld the firing of a police officer who’d pleaded guilty to drunken driving.
The Gazette reported that the commission Monday affirmed the firing of Austin Mensen, 29. Police Chief Wayne Jerman fired Mensen on Sept. 24 last year. He appealed to the commission.
Anamosa police arrested Mensen early in the morning of May 27 last year, and he later pleaded guilty to drunken driving, second offense. City spokesman Greg Buelow said Mensen’s first drunken driving arrest occurred before his July 2016 hiring.
Mensen’s attorney, Skylar Limkemann, said Mensen “undisputably had diagnosed, work-related disabilities from responding to horrific shootings.” Limkemann said Mensen is weighing further action.
