Helen L. Tucker, 84, retired federal accounting supervisor

Helen L. Tucker, a retired accounting supervisor, died on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017. She was 84.

Born on July 28, 1933, in Philadelphia, she was the third of five children born to Mary Ellen and Bennett Johnson.

Tucker was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and was a graduate of Overbrook High School. She attended Temple University and later obtained an associate’s degree in business administration from Community College of Philadelphia in 1983. She began her career at defunct Gimbels Brothers department store as a secretary and then worked for the state government. She progressed through several positions within the federal government before she retired as an accounting supervisor.


Tucker served on the board of elections for about 40 years at her neighborhood polling location.

She married George H. Tucker on Oct. 10, 1953, and they had four children. She also served as a mother figure to the late Joan Overby.

Tucker was an avid leader in the community. She volunteered for Carroll Park Association in the food distribution program and was the president of the Mother’s Club of the Philadelphia School of Dance Arts. She also volunteered for various activities at the Guion Bluford Elementary School. She was an active member of NARFE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association).

Tucker was baptized and joined St. Philips Lutheran Church in 1948. She was an active member at the church during her lifetime, serving as president of the dramatics club, leading the bereavement committee, serving as a youth counselor, volunteering for the vacation Bible school and assisting with the food distribution program.

She loved traveling, listening to music, dancing and was an avid reader. Her favorite teams were the Philadelphia Eagles and the 76ers.

“Helen was very strong (and) determined but had a very gentle spirit and lived her spiritual commitment by helping everyone she knew and strangers as well in whatever way she was needed,” her family said in a tribute.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Johnson, and brother, Clarence Johnson.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by: her children, Angela Tucker-Cooper, Michael Tucker, Lisa Hodge (Jeffery Hodge Sr.) and Kimberly Tucker; aunt, Mildred Sharpe; sister, Dorothy Hamilton; brother, Donald F. Johnson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Tucker; grandchildren, Zoey Ashley, Jennifer and Michelle Cooper and Jeffery Hodge Jr.; great-grandson, Zamir Ashley; other relatives; and friends.

Services will be held Aug. 28 at St. Philip’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 525 N. 53rd St. Viewing is at 10 a.m. Services will follow at 11 a.m. Burial is in Fernwood Cemetery.
