Man charged in shooting outside Cleveland elementary school

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Cleveland man is accused of shooting a 30-year-old man outside an elementary school.

Javon Cooper, 30, is charged with attempted murder. He is not in police custody and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The shooting happened about 6 p.m. Aug. 30 in the playground behind Willow Elementary School, police reports say. No arrests have been made.

The man told police he was hanging out at the playground near the basketball court when a black BMW SUV drove up, police reports say.

The driver got out, never said a word and fired about six gunshots at him from a .40-caliber handgun, police reports say.

The man suffered five gunshot wounds in his left leg and left arm.

A man who lives nearby heard the gunfire, saw the man was shot and drove him to MetroHealth, according to police reports.

Officers reported finding blood splattered on the basketball court and fired bullet casings near Finn Avenue.

Cooper was convicted in 2013 of illegally processing drug documents after police found him with illegal prescription painkillers during a drug bust. He was sentenced to time served.
