South Side shooting victim dies; homicide charges to be filed, Madison police say
The man shot in the back of the head Wednesday night at a South Side apartment complex has died.
Rayshawn Jackson, 24, died overnight at UW Hospital, Madison police said.
Antonio Gentry, 36, was arrested shortly after the shooting and now faces homicide charges.
“The department will be asking the district attorney to charge him with first-degree intentional homicide,” said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.
The shooting happened outside 9 Waunona Woods Court. After Gentry allegedly shot Jackson, he tried to flee the area, going into and out of several apartment buildings as well as trying to carjack two vehicles.
People living in the Monona Shores neighborhood met with police Monday night to talk about the shooting and what can be done to prevent another.
NBC15 reported several people at the meeting want to see extra police patrols, but Police Chief Mike Koval and Dane County Board Supv. Shelia Stubbs, who lives in the neighborhood, said this shooting was not a random incident and was unlikely to happen again.
