Steve Butler, Tang Yeping Win Badminton Championships

ATLANTA (AP) _ Steve Butler defeated defending champion Kevin Han 15-2, 15-11 Sunday to win the 1996 U.S. National Badminton Championship.

It was the first U.S. championship for Butler, a former British champ from Miller Place, N.Y.

In the women’s singles championship, Tang Yeping of Gaithersburg, Md., beat Andrea Andersson of Colorado Springs 11-6, 11-4.

In the men’s doubles, Han, of Colorado Spings, and Tom Reidy of Tempe, Ariz., defeated Andy Chong of Miami Lakes, Fla., and Ben Lee of San Jose, Calif., 15-8, 18-13.

Ann French of La Jolla, Calif, and Kathy Zimmerman of Denver, Colo., took the women’s doubles title by beating Yeping and Andersson 15-7, 8-15, 15-9.

Chong and Yeping won the mixed doubles over Mike Edstrom of Denver and Andersson 12-15, 15-8, 15-6.

The championships were held at Georgia State University. The event will not determine the Olympic team, but will play a role in its selection.
