Alex Okafor hoping to lock down role on Saints defensive line
It always good to break up a routine, especially if you’re out at training camp. The New Orleans Saints took that philosophy Sunday night when they hosted a nighttime practice at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium for the fans. But it was also nice for the players and coaches to get out of the sun and allow more fans to attend.
The black and gold did this in 2014, but new defensive end Alex Okafor was obviously not there for it last time. He came to New Orleans in the offseason after hearing about how the Saints needed a stronger defensive end to compliment Cam Jordan. Okafor heard this from his best friend and former teammate, Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro.
Okafor came to the big easy from Arizona where they already had two great edge rushers and now he hopes he can be that guy for the Saints.
“Things are going pretty well. I still have a lot to learn. Most importantly, I need to get more comfortable in the defense and I think I’m making good strides in that,” said Okafor.
“You know, he got some outside rush, but we worked him in the Nascar or nickel rush. He’s healthy and I think you’re seeing some real good signs,” added Saints head coach Sean Payton.
“All last year I was mainly an interior rusher. I got some good experience last year and just trying to carry that over,” explained Okafor.
Okafor added that he’s excited to play alongside these guys when New Orleans kicks off the preseason on Thursday.
