Investigation into teen sex activity underway at Durham’s Riverside High School
The Durham County Sheriff’s Office and administrators at Riverside High School have launched an investigation into reports of sexual activity on school grounds, behavior that was apparently shared during an Instagram Live post, authorities said Wednesday.
A spokesman for Durham Public Schools confirmed to WRAL News that Riverside High Principal Tonya Williams has launched a review of what happened between a male and a female student sometime this month.
Law enforcement officers were at the school at the start of this week as part of a criminal investigation into the incident.
According to a search warrant obtained Monday by a Durham sheriff’s deputy, a male Riverside student and a female student had a verbal argument three days earlier after the boy began telling other classmates about a sex act performed on him by the girl, an incident that was captured and shared on Instagram.
The identities of both students and their ages were not released because they are juveniles.
At least one school administrator told the deputy that he had been told about a classroom on campus where students were engaged in sexual activity, according to the search warrant.
It was not immediately clear if anyone has been charged, arrested or suspended from school in connection with the incident.
A spokesman for Durham schools issued a statement, saying the school’s administrators are taking action.
“Principal Williams has taken steps to help prevent such incidents from happening in the future,” district spokesman Chip Sudderth said in the statement. “Due to student privacy laws, we cannot share any more information on the subject, but we are investigating, and the safety and privacy of our students is our highest concern.”
A deputy at Riverside High says a student confided in him, which prompted the investigation.
Dalyn Kincy recently graduated from Riverside High, and he told WRAL News that he was not surprised by the incident.
“No, I am really not, because it always happens,” he said.
He said he remembers students hiding sexual activity in stairwells and other out-of the-way areas on the school’s sprawling campus.
According to warrants, an administrator at Riverside High School told an officer that he found out students were taking part in sexual acts inside a classroom.
Investigators with the Durham Sheriff’s Office want to search the cell phones of three people for evidence.
Student Ben Neal does not believe this kind of conduct is the norm at his school.
“Not at all,” he said.
