Dorothy Mae (White) Thorndyke, 85, of Shorewood, and formerly of Piper City and Ashkum, passed away at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 1, 2018) at Alden Courts in Shorewood.
A celebration of her life will be from 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, until the 2 p.m. funeral service at Redenius Funeral Home in Gilman, with the Rev. Malcolm Jones officiating. Burial will be in Brenton Cemetery in Piper City.
Memorials may be made to the Methodist Church in Ashkum.Dorothy was born June 16, 1933, in Farina, the daughter of Melvin and Mildred (Perry) White. Her childhood was spent in southern Illinois. After high school graduation, she attended Photography School in Chicago. Dorothy married Duane Francis Thorndyke in 1956 at the Methodist Church in Piper City. He preceded her in death in 1993.Surviving are a son, Dan Thorndyke, of Metamora; two grandsons, Justin Wayne Thorndyke, of Hawaii, and Daniel Douglas Thorndyke, of California; and three great-grandchildren, Ruby, Jane and Maddy.In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; son, Douglas; and brother, Merle White.Dorothy was a member of the Methodist Church in Ashkum and former member of the Methodist Church in Cullom. She was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher and was very involved in church activities. Her love for God was evident in her actions and shared with those who knew her. Dorothy’s life always involved sharing God’s love with children and friends.“She was a wonderful wife and mother,” her friends and family said, and also a farmer, secretary at Nichols Homeshield in Chatsworth and worked at H&R Block in Kankakee.Dorothy was a Cub Scout den mother.
