Seven-story Lincoln sculpture needs $95,000-plus in repairs
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Officials say a seven-story work of art in downtown Lincoln needs more than $95,000 in repairs.
Parks and Recreation Department director Lynn Johnson says someone or some people have bumped into and damaged 10 glass panels along the bottom of the sculpture, called Ascent.
The Lincoln Journal Star reports that an inspection by a drone found no damage above those lower sections.
The repair cost is up to $95,460, under a contract with Derix Art Glass Consultants, the German firm that created and installed Ascent for artist Jun Kaneko. The work is expected to begin later this month.
The repair bill will be paid with money remaining from the construction project funds.
Ascent was installed in 2014. It is made up of 80 glass panels, each 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and weighing 160 pounds (72.6 kilograms), made of two layers of glued glass, with a final layer of hand-cut stained glass.
