Death Threats to Florida Players?

Florida coach Jim McElwain can handle the heat, the hate and even the harassment.

He gets paid to deal with it.

But he would like his players, coaches and all their families, including his own, to be left alone.

McElwain said Florida players and families have received death threats amid the team’s struggles. McElwain acknowledged the allegation while responding to a question about whether the team deserves credit for staying competitive despite missing more than 20 scholarship players because of injuries and suspensions.


Thomas’ career in jeopardy

Joe Thomas felt the tendon detach from his elbow and roll up in his arm, and before the pain registered, the Browns’ seemingly indestructible tackle realized everything had changed.

His day was over. His season done. His career in doubt. Cleveland’s iron man was finally flattened. Thomas suffered a torn left triceps during Sunday’s loss to Tennessee and will miss the remainder of his 11th NFL season. The 32-year-old Thomas, who had never missed a snap since turning pro in 2007, will undergo surgery Tuesday and could need nine months to recover from a serious injury that has left him pondering his future beyond this season.

Texans veteran left tackle Duane Brown ended his holdout on Monday after missing the team’s first six games. ... Marshawn Lynch presented his appeal to the NFL to overturn his one-game suspension for bumping an official and Oakland coach Jack Del Rio hopes to get a resolution soon.


Mets introduce manager

Once the New York Mets talked to Mickey Callaway, there was no need for a second round of interviews. Callaway was introduced as the 21st manager in franchise history. The 42-year-old Callaway spent the last five seasons as the pitching coach for the Cleveland Indians.

Former Major Leaguer and current television analyst Ray Knight has been charged with assault following an incident in his northern Virginia home. Fairfax County Police said they were called to Knight’s home in the Alexandria area about 4 a.m. Sunday for reports of a fight. Police say Knight got into a fight with a 33-year-old male acquaintance and that both had visible injuries.


Suns in turmoil

Phoenix point guard Eric Bledsoe was sent home, a day after the Suns fired coach Earl Watson and replaced him on an interim basis with Jay Triano. Bledsoe sent a tweet that read “Don’t wanna be here.”

Stephen Curry has been fined $50,000 for throwing his mouthpiece in the direction of an official during the final minute of Golden State’s loss at Memphis on Saturday night. Teammate Andre Iguodala received a $15,000 fine for his response and “verbally abusing a game official” late in the 111-101 loss. ... Anaheim Ducks forward Patrick Eaves has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, and his hockey career is on hold while he recovers. Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which a patient’s immune system attacks the nervous system, sometimes resulting in death. Eaves’ condition stabilized after his stint in the ICU.
