Herd tennis sweeps doubleheader
HUNTINGTON — Marshall University’s youth movement paid dividends Saturday when the Thundering Herd women’s tennis team swept its matches against Wright State University and West Virginia State University in the Huntington Tennis Club.
Marshall defeated Wright State 5-2, with singles wins by Anna Smith, Victoria Walter, Madi Ballow. Daniela Dankanych and Matilde Mulatero. Marshall blanked West Virginia State 7-0, with singles wins by Smith, Walter, Dankanych, Ballow, Liz Stefancic and Mulatero. Doubles wins by Smith/Walter and Dankanych/Mulatero completed the shutout of WVSU.
Ballow, Mulatero, Stefancic and Walter are freshmen. Smith is a sophomore and Dankanych a junior.
“I thought this was important for our freshmen,” Marshall head coach John Mercer said in a HerdZone.com release. “This gave them a little adversity and they responded really well.”
Marshall’s next match is 4 p.m. Friday at home against James Madison University.
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Marshall split its women’s swimming matches with Liberty University and Campbell University.
Liberty defeated Marshall 249.5 to 112.5, and the Thundering Herd beat Campbell 195 to 158.
Catherine Bendziewicz from Marshall won the 100 freestyle in 51.90 seconds. The Herd’s 400 individual medley swimmers also had a win by Caroline Wanner (4:34.25).
Maddie Young finished third in diving.
Marshall swims at 11 a.m. Sunday at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
