Massachusetts state police warn of sporadic 911 outages
BOSTON (AP) — Public safety officials in Massachusetts are warning of sporadic 911 outages.
In an alert sent to cellphones Friday, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency recommended individuals looking for emergency help use the 10-digit telephone number to contact their fire or police departments.
The numbers are available on the internet and through directory assistance.
The Massachusetts State Police said calls made from either home landline telephones or cellphones may not go through. The problem initially appeared to effect cellphones only.
The problems appear related to outages from Louisiana-based CenturyLink, which affected some Verizon customers.
Those seeking emergency help are advised to try 911 first and if that doesn’t work, call their local fire or police departments directly.
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai announced Friday the agency is launching an investigation into the nationwide CenturyLink internet outage.
