Those qualified can find school bus driving positions

March 24, 2017

Flexible hours, benefits and incentives are a few of the perks of becoming a school bus driver in the greater Houston area, and this is a good time of year to search for bus driver opportunities.

Having a commercial driver’s license (CDL) is a must and can sometimes be earned via on-the-job training. Also important is a clean driving record and a high school diploma.

The Katy Independent School District’s transportation department currently has 620 school buses and 450 bus drivers. On average, a bus driver works five hours with pay at $16.41. Katy ISD also offers health care for drivers who work more than 15 hours; $2 day care for up to fifth grade; and bonuses for attendance, safe driving and new driver referrals.

“We are constantly looking for qualified bus drivers to become a part of this growing school district. Every year our enrollment numbers increase by about 2,500-plus students. Katy ISD provides good benefits as well as bonuses and other incentives to keep our new and current bus drivers. We would love to have you as part of the Katy ISD transportation team,” said Maria DiPetta, media manager for Katy ISD.

In addition to general requirements, Katy ISD is looking for candidates with a great personality and the ability to pass both discipline-management and emergency-crisis classes.

Houston ISD also is looking for applicants interested in being part of a team that transports nearly 35,000 students each day to and from school, as well as educational field trips and athletic events.

With HISD, candidates are required to be at least 18 years of age, have a valid Texas driver’s license, have the ability to pass a background investigation, as well as drug/alcohol screening and Department of Transportation (DOT) physical. They also must be able to communicate in English orally and in writing.

HISD incentives include a $250 sign-on bonus, $1,200 attendance incentive and $100 unlimited referral incentives. CDL training classes also are provided as well as health, dental, vision and other benefit options; with Teachers Retirement System participation, and 403(b) retirement plan options. Pay starts at $16.16 an hour with a guaranteed minimum of five hours per day.
