Want to celebrate trees?
With 1,000 free trees at the ready, the 16th annual Arbor Day celebration in Rochester will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Three Links – Silver Lake Park, 840 Seventh St. NE.
In addition to free trees, lunch and live music, the event will feature several new activities and vendors this year, including the Minnesota Children’s Museum the Rochester Art Center, Saint Mary’s University-Cascade Meadow and Rochester’s Water Reclamation Plant.
Stephanie Humphrey of RPU said the goal is to help inform families and others about the merits of trees planting and other efforts to enrich the environment.
Additionally, the event will feature a noon announcement of winners of the elementary school Arbor Day Poster Contest, which was open to all Rochester Public Schools students in grades 1 through 5.
With each winner’s class invited to attend, along with all other RPS third- through fifth-grade classes, Humphrey said approximately 1,500 students are expected to take part in the event.
The event is organized through a three-way partnership between Rochester Public Utilities, Maier Tree and Lawn and Rochester Parks and Recreation.
In the case of extreme weather, the event will be moved indoors to Rochester Community and Technical College’s Field House.
