Woman sexually assaulted during jog near Apex elementary school
Police in Apex are trying to identify a man who they say assaulted a woman while she was jogging on Tuesday.
According to the Apex Police Department, a 21-year-old woman was walking back to her car, parked at Kelly Road Park, around 4:30 p.m. when she was sexually assaulted near Olive Chapel Elementary.
The victim described sensing someone walking closely behind her.
According to police, an unknown man approached her, pushed her onto the ground and attempted to climb on top of her.
Police say the man then assaulted the woman by “grabbing her legs outside her clothing.”
When the woman started screaming, the man ran away and was seen jumping the school’s playground fence, heading toward the back of the school.
“I think this was maybe more of a crime of opportunity than anything,” said Captain Joey Best. “The victim was wearing ear buds and we really don’t know how long he was behind her. It’s not her fault.”
Police and K-9 units responded and attempted to track the suspect, and Best says officers are ramping up patrols around the area.
“We’re pretty certain that this is an isolated incident, but we’re treating it with the attention it deserves,” he said.
Anyone who recognizes the man, who was captured on video by local surveillance cameras, is asked to call the Apex Police Department at 919-362-8661.
