Emerson Survey Highlights Critical Role of Comfort During Holiday Gatherings

November 4, 2019

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 4, 2019--

If you’ve ever adjusted a thermostat at a holiday party to gain relief from sweating through a homemade reindeer sweater – you’re not alone. A new survey by heating and cooling technology leader Emerson (NYSE: EMR) shines a light on the critical role of temperature and comfort during holiday gatherings.

The survey found that nearly three out of five respondents (58%) say they have (or know someone who has) adjusted someone else’s thermostat during the holidays without telling them. This sneaky holiday maneuver may be a party saver: Half of Americans surveyed (50%) said they are likely to leave a gathering early if the temperature is too hot or too cold.

While the vast majority (88%) believe adjusting someone else’s thermostat is rude, many can readily identify a culprit of this holiday havoc: One in five respondents (21%) point to their spouse or partner as the person most likely to adjust the thermostat setting of a family member’s house during a holiday visit. Similarly, 29% of those surveyed believe their spouse or partner is likely to gripe about the indoor temperature during holiday gatherings.

Through its Sensi™ smart thermostats, Emerson is committed to helping enhance human comfort and health throughout the home and all seasons. The Sensi™ Touch and Sensi smart thermostat have been named “Best Overall Smart Thermostat” and “Best Value Thermostat” three straight years by USA Today’s Reviewed.com.

“Temperature is the unsung hero of the holidays and making sure guests are comfortable can ensure the focus of the season is on being together – and not going on covert searches for the host’s thermostat,” said Bob Sharp, executive president of Emerson’s Commercial & Residential Solutions business. “Through flexible features and advanced technology, Sensi smart thermostats are putting control and ease directly in the fingertips of customers to create their ideal comfort experience.”

Holiday hosts who want to prevent temperature subterfuge, take note: Most survey respondents reported preferring similar indoor temperatures, with the ideal temperature hovering around 70 degrees. In fact, 66% of those surveyed say their ideal indoor temperature falls between 68 and 72 degrees. Sensi smart thermostats are available at retail stores, in online marketplaces, through HVAC contractors and at sensi.emerson.com.
