The Bethel field hockey team will live to fight another day as Vicky Gracy fired a hat trick to lift the Wildcats to a dramatic 3-2 overtime over Wamogo in the Class S qualifying round on Monday.

Newtown continued its stellar postseason in the first round of the Class LL tournament as SWC tournament MVP Karsen Pirone fired a hat trick in a 6-2 win over Enfield at home. The No. 8 Nighthawks will host No. 9 Amity on Wednesday.

Newtown fell behind early before blitzing the visiting Eagles. Emma Curtis scored twice in the win for Newtown, which reached the quarterfinals last year.

SWC finalist Pomperaug easily made the second round of the Class L tournament behind a 6-0 win over Windsor. Six different players -- Bethany Karp, Sydney Lousbury, Lauren Neisser, Caitlin Lewis, Izzy Azar-Brandes and Katie Johnson -- scored goals for the Panthers, who will visit No. 5 RHAM in the round of 16 on Wednesday.

Barlow claimed a penalty shootout win in its Class L opener, edging Sacred Heart Academy on the road after a 2-2 draw. The No. 23 Falcons (7-7-1) won the shootout 4-2 and will visit No. 7 Wethersfield on Wednesday.


Newtown swept SWC rival New Milford 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) in the first round of the Class LL tournament. The fifth-seeded Nighthawks fell to Barlow in the SWC final on Saturday, but rebounded for the sweep Monday.

No. 5 Newtown will host No. 12 Darien, a team its beat twice this fall.

Brookfield overcame a slow start to brush aside Maloney 3-1 (11-25, 25-21, 25-10, 25-12) in the Class L first round. The No. 12 Bobcats -- who moved up from Class M -- will visit No. 5 Tolland in the second round on Thursday.

Ridgefield fended off Wilbur Cross 3-2 in the first round in Class LL, taking the decisive fifth set 15-12 at home. The Tigers twice led the match by a set but the Governors almost claimed the upset. No. 15 Ridgefield will visit No. 2 Cheshire in the second round.
