Audit: Utah children at risk during care provider appeals
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A state audit found that Utah children are being put at risk when child care facilities accused of violating safety standards are allowed to operate as normal during their appeals process.
Deseret News reports the audit released on Tuesday was prepared by the Office of the Legislative Auditor General, and it states the Division of Family Health and Preparedness’ Child Care Licensing program does not increase its monitoring of facilities during the appeals process.
The audit also found the process stalls the use of sanctions, so facilities continue to have contact with children even in cases of confirmed abuse.
Director Paul Patrick says the division is working on condensing the appeals process and plans to “implement monitoring processes so that children are still protected during appeals.”
