FAIRBURY -- The Beatrice Neapco Juniors built a big lead early, but let it slip away late in the first round of the Juniors Class B Area 4 Tournament.

Neapco fell to Crete 14-8 Friday afternoon in Fairbury. They built a 7-1 lead after three innings, but then allowed Crete to score 10 runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the seventh inning to make it 14-7.

Beatrice scored a lone run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

With the loss, Beatrice falls to an elimination game on Saturday at noon where they will play Aurora.

Things got off to a good start for Beatrice on Friday. Crete scored in the top of the first, but Beatrice countered with four runs in the second inning.

Brody Nelson got the rally started with a single and Devin Smith walked. After two outs were recorded, Zane Hoffman was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Joe Wallman then reached on a throwing error, which allowed two runs to score, giving Beatrice a 2-1 lead.

Matt Jobman kept the inning going by reaching on a walk. Two runs came into score on Will Reimer’s two-RBI single to make it 4-1.

In the third inning, Smith singled to lead off the inning and then scored on Zack Zimmerman’s two-run opposite field home run over the fence making it 6-1.

Neapco wasn’t done yet in the third inning. Hoffman got things going again with a one out walk and Wallman was hit by a pitch. Jobman then singled, but the runner was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning.

A wild pitch would allow another run to score, making the score 7-1.

It would be all Crete after that, though.

In the pivotal fifth inning, a single got things started for Crete, but the next two hitters made outs.

Crete then proceeded to rally for 10 runs with two outs. Several walks, a hit batsman led to the first couple of runs for Crete and a grand slam home run made it 9-7.

The next hitter then singled and he scored on another home run, making it 11-7.

Three errors and two singles led to three more runs for Crete in the top of the seventh inning.

Beatrice scratched one more run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Zimmerman was hit by a pitch to lead off and Zane Hoffman singled with one out. Eli Magnall then walked to load the bases and Will Reimer singled to bring it a run, making the final score 14-8.

Beatrice had eight hits in the game. Zimmerman’s home run was the only extra base hit. Reimer and Brody Nelson had two singles each while Jobman, Devin Smith and Hoffman had a single each.

Joe Wallman, Eli Magnall and Zane Hoffman combined to pitch the game for the Neapco Juniors.

The loss brings Beatrice’s record to 13-11 on the season.
