State needs to get serious about CWD -- Mark K. Allen

As we approach the start of the deer hunt, let us remember that the number of deer infected with chronic wasting disease is rising, the number of deer tested is down, and there is now proof of species-to-species transmission.

Too many Wisconsin deer hunters are in CWD denial. Adding to the problem are the governor and our Legislature that enable and assist in this denial. Since its discovery in 2002, little real work has been done to reduce cases of CWD, and what has been done has met resistance.

It is time for state leaders to turn the problem over to experts in contagious diseases and animal health. They should allow for study and a strategy to effectively control the problem. And then it will be time for all to listen to these scientists and follow through with a plan.
