Garza schoolchildren benefit from Holiday Bike Donation Program

December 17, 2016 GMT

For most children, there are few Christmas gifts better than a brand new shiny bicycle, and what could be better than receiving a bicycle before Christmas?

Christmas came early for some Brownsville children as well as those attending a few other schools in the Rio GrandeValley on Friday when the Academy Sports and Outdoors store presented them with free bicycles.

The bicycles were handed out during surprise presentations at the schools. Thirty students in all received the free bikes and helmets.

Natasha Naik, a spokeswoman for Academy Sports and Outdoors, detailed the purpose of the donation as “providing schools with an opportunity to reward children during the holidays with bikes and helmets for perfect attendance, academic performance, good behavior and/or need.”

Naik went on to say “the bike donation fits with Academy’s active-minded philosophy by rewarding kids with gifts that allow them to get outside and be active.”

More than $250,000 worth of bikes and helmets were to be donated at more than 140 separate donation events across the country.

The children at Garza Elementary gathered in the school’s cafeteria, where 30 Magna Charger bicycles were lined up in front of the stage. Other Valley elementary schools selected were Rudy Silva in Weslaco, Aida C. Escobar in Pharr and Carl C. Waltz in Alton.
