By The Associated PressJanuary 15, 2018

The New Hampshire political leader who signed legislation recognizing Martin Luther King Day as a state holiday is participating in annual festivities.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is joining fellow Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan at the Martin Luther King Day Interfaith Celebration at the North Church in Portsmouth. Shaheen has said one of her proudest days as governor was signing the bill that created the holiday in 1999.

Events are being held across the state.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster was joining the National Cultural Diversity Awareness Council Sunday at its annual event in Manchester.

Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter said in a statement that everyone has a responsibility to fight for equal opportunities for all. She quoted civil rights activist John Lewis in saying “speak up” when something isn’t right.
