John Thompson: Was Karl Marx right?
When one of the founders of communism, Karl Marx, was asked his opinion about the fledgling American Democracy, he famously responded that it would only last until the voters discovered that they could control their taxes at the ballot box.
In our current time, a person of sufficient means can change his lifelong political party, and then by patronizing a broad spectrum of small but collectively adequate groups tilt the electoral process in his favor. Then in a position of power control his taxes. In a variation of his words, perhaps Karl Marx was right.
