Carter takes helm at Avis Huff
Kankakee School District 111 has found a new leader for the Avis Huff Student Support Services Center.
Leah Carter will replace Larue Fitch, who took a job elsewhere after one year on the job. Carter will earn a $90,000 salary in her new role.
Carter was an assistant principal at Rich East High School for the past year. Before that, she was a physical education teacher, assistant athletic director and sports coach for Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202.
“She is really excited to work with the kids,” said Kathleen O’Connor, the school district’s assistant superintendent for human resources. “Relationships are important to her. She has already hit the ground running, wanting to do different programs. She has a lot of positive energy that we think will benefit the students and staff at Avis.”
Carter holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from Aurora University. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Judson University.
She will assume her new duties on July 1.
The school board also promoted third-grade dual language teacher Edith Bender-Petty to an assistant principal at Kankakee High School. Bender-Petty will oversee the high school’s Class of 2021. Her salary will be $75,000.
Longtime Kankakee High School bookkeeper Annette Flournoy also received a promotion. She now will be head bookkeeper of the school district. Her salary is $53,000
