Volunteers to Fix Damage to Picture Rock Trail Caused by Motorcyclists
Redstone Cyclery is organizing a group of volunteers Tuesday to repair damage to Picture Rock Trail done in February by motorcyclists riding illegally.
Along with two trail supervisors from Boulder County Parks and Open Space, volunteers will meet at 5 p.m. at the Picture Rock trailhead in Heil Valley Ranch just south of Lyons.
While some in the community called for the motorcyclists to fix the damage themselves, Jason Vroman, a senior ranger with Boulder County Parks and Open Space, said the $450 in fines levied against the bikers for using a motor vehicle on open space property, operating in a closed area and violating resource protection rules more than covered the costs of repair.
With only 200 yards of trail that needs to be leveled out, Boulder County Parks and Open Space expect volunteers with Redstone Cyclery can complete the work well before nightfall Tuesday.
Once the ruts are filled, Andy Tyler, the trail supervisor for Boulder County Parks and Open Space, said popular trail could open as early as this weekend.
“Because of the recent snowstorms, the trail has been too muddy to repair,” Tyler said. “We need to smooth that out and do some other touch up, but if we keep getting these warm days, the trail could be open before the weekend.”
