Barbara J. Reese, 69, retired federal government employee

Barbara J. Reese, a retired Social Security Administration employee, died on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. She was 69.

She was affectionately known as “BJ.” She was born on Nov. 3, 1948 in Philadelphia to the late Theodore and Ruth Reese.

She was married to the late Bernard “Larry” Baxter.

Reese was educated in Germany for her primary years and later returned to the United States to receive her diploma from Olney High School. After graduating from high school she started her professional career with the federal government and worked in many departments within the Social Security Administration.

Reese believed in the Lord and would always pray for the friends and family in need. Her friends Whileamena and Doreen would often pray with her.

Reese was known for her famous baked mac and cheese and her potato salad from her mother Ruth’s recipe. She never really lost her cool or came out of character. She loved to shop for extraordinary items and her taste was impeccable.

Reese loved being on the go and in her younger years she loved to dance and party. Her favorite artists were Smokey Robinson and Diana Ross.

Reese always spoke about her younger years as a military brat where she traveled the world at such a young age. She often spoke of the fun she had growing up in North Philly.

“Barbara was very giving, kind and loyal and all who knew her loved her,” her family said in a tribute.

She was preceded in death by her first grandson, “Lil” Barry, with whom she shared a special bond.

She is survived by: her sons, Barry (Jeanette) and Sean; grandchildren, Shannon and Chyna; favorite cousin, Thomasina (Pinky) and other relatives and friends.

Services were held May 31 at Zion Baptist Church, 3600 N. Broad St.

Emmanuel Johnson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
