Turks Kill 10 Kurds in Iraq

May 24, 2000

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) _ Turkish forces killed 10 Kurdish guerrillas in gunbattles in northern Iraq, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

The clashes against members of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, took place over the weekend 2 1/2 miles across the Turkish border in northern Iraq, the Hurriyet newspaper reported.

Turkish soldiers frequently cross into northern Iraq to pursue PKK fighters. Iraqi Kurdish groups have controlled that region since the end of the Gulf War in 1991.

After announcing a unilateral cease-fire last year, PKK fighters retreated to bases in Iran and Iraq. Turkey has refused to accept the cease-fire and says that the military will keep fighting until all of the rebels have surrendered or have been killed.

Turkey has waged a 15-year war against Kurdish guerrillas who are demanding autonomy in southern Turkey. Fighting has been reduced to sporadic clashes since the PKK announced it would lay down its arms earlier this year.
