Ceremony celebrates veterans
BRIDGEPORT — In preparation for Veterans Day, the fourth annual “Service to Country and Community” Awards will take place on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Port 5 Naval Veterans, 69 Brewster St. in Black Rock.
The event is organized by The WorkPlace and a planning committee of representatives from Connecticut Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Connecticut Department of Labor, Alpha Community Services, Housatonic Community College, and Port 5 Naval Veterans.
The awardees are:
• Mike Kellett, of Shelton, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1982-1986 and remains involved in several veteran’s organizations and initiatives in the community;
• Rivers of Recovery, for the organization’s innovative approach to build self-confidence and independence in wounded combat veterans suffering from PTSD and depression;
• Northeast Tree Service, for their commitment to hiring veterans and organizing events to fundraise for various veteran initiatives.
